The BARB figures for first-time viewing in the third week of July show another win for Channel 5 (4.6%) over Channel 4 (4.4%). It nudges back in C4's favour when you add +1 - 5.1% plays 5.0%.
One man who'll be watching performance is Mark Price of Waitrose, who steps up from non-executive director of C4 to deputy chairman, filling the gap left by Tony Hall. Earlier this week Mark - a John Lewis lifer - added JL deputy chairmanship to his cv.
Added to the non-executive roster at C4 is Professor Stewart Purvis, ex ITN and Ofcom, ex BBC newstrainee and entertaining blogger.

Summer schedules
The tv share figures are in for the second week of July - hotter than the first - and Channel 5 has again beaten Channel 4 - 4.7% plays 4.3%. When you add +1 it's a tie - 5.1% each. But Channel 5 viewers watched on average for five minutes longer.
This new world order may continue till, perhaps, the Media Guardian Edinburgh Television Festival, when Jay Hunt, leader of creative renewal at C4, will explain to terrier Boyd Hilton of Heat Magazine when the new generation of hit shows will be arriving - and who has commissioned them. The word "consternation" has been used to describe the current mood at Horseferry Road.
The Edinburgh tv event is on August 22. On September 30, John McCririck's tribunal hearing against his dismissal from C4 Racing begins - seven days of evidence have been pencilled in, with witness including Jay Hunt.

Heat
It seems Channel 4's figures are taking a bigger hit than most from the warm weather. BARB's public ratings for the first week of July show 4's share of audience falling behind Channel 5 - 3.8% plays 4.0%.
If you add in +1 viewing, C4 comes back - 4.5% plays 4.3%.
On Thursday of this week, all day ratings for C4 delivered a 4.1% share - with Channel 5 hitting 4.9%.

Commercial terms
News today that ITV under Adam Crozier is contemplating two major investments - Endemol, creators of Big Brother; and Cheryl Cole, creation of Simon Cowell. I wonder which will prove a long-term success.
Meanwhile, Sally Bercow, Westminster's answer to Florence and The Machine, and fresh from her exertions on the current Channel Five version of Celebrity Big Brother, has taken another Richard Desmond shilling, by signing as a columnist for the Daily Star Sunday.

Vanishing ?
Head to the Channel 5 website, type in Vanessa Feltz, and lo, a sad, but perhaps inevitable message: "Sorry, The Vanessa Show isn't currently scheduled to be on any of our channels".
This week at 1415 weekdays, we have Law and Order; next we have CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
The Mirror reported Vanessa's exit a little prematurely in March; she'd simply been moved from before lunch to after. I think I called it right in May. But maybe Mr Desmond still has something up his sleeve for the hardest-working woman in the business ?

Collar Feltz
The normally-unerring eye for talent that has blessed Richard Desmond may have suffered a small mote. There are rumours this week of conversations between Channel 5 executives and the hardest-working-woman-in-showbiz, Vanessa Feltz, where the first line goes "People just don't want to watch you on tv". The second part is not recorded.
The Daily Mirror reported in March that the programme ("The dirt always comes out on the Vanessa Show, with Carpet Right") was facing the axe, without really noticing that it had been moved from a morning slot to the afternoon. The Guardian reviewed the afternoon effort in April, noting that Vanessa "co-hosts informal sofa banter with her fiance, Ben, who looks like he's won a competition."
Looks like a chance for Richard to give another outing or two to the key Randolph Scott oeuvre, Santa Fe, which at least secured an audience of 27,000 when the Royal Wedding was on...

Cake slicing
Still on the hunt for Royal Wedding viewing statistics, grim news for Richard Desmond's Channel 5. At 11.00am on Friday, just 69,000 viewers were still with Matthew Wright for the tail of his show. At 11.15am, 27,000 were enjoying Randolph Scott in Santa Fe.
In Canada, 38% of the population tuned in for some part of Friday's coverage - giving the BBC estimate of 2 billion a welcome 12 million.
Mark Byford, in what seems to be a statement, rather than an answer to a question, says "The huge audience of so many millions who shared the day with the BBC is a testament to all those involved in producing such high-quality and distinctive coverage, and proves once again that the BBC is the broadcaster of choice for audiences during big national events." Will he be quizzed on the final figure, say, by someone as fearless as BBC correspondent (ex arts and media) Nick Higham, who tweeted on Saturday thus...

Holiday time
The hardest working woman in show business seems to be taking another holiday. Vanessa's Radio 2 show is being covered by Nikki Chapman this week (Aled Jones being required to do the Easter stuff for the network at the end of the week) and Jenni Barnett fills in on Radio London. There are few details about her afternoon show on Channel 5 this week - presumably all recorded earlier.
- Stay in touch with Vanessa's producer on BBC London, Kate Lyons, as she talks Mums Baby Magazine through her pregnancy progress, with a range of products mentioned.

Turbo Van
You've got to keep an eye on the hardest-working-woman in the business. I've only just noticed that Vanessa Feltz's Channel 5 show has been moved from 11.00am to 2.15pm, and extended by five minutes. Let's hope the audience finds it.
This exciting day-in-the-life piece in the Sunday Express indicates the hard work that goes into her broadcasting. Note all the time for research, reflection and briefing. Two radio shows in the morning, and three fifty minute shows recorded in five hours from 2pm.

Working holidays
There's an interesting but inevitable schedule for the hardest-working woman in showbiz this half term week. Vanessa Feltz, anointed as Radio 2's Number 1 dep for Jeremy Vine, sits in at noon. But the network asks Aled Jones to cover her 0500-0630 slot. And over at Radio London, Jeni Barnett covers for Vanessa between 9 and 12. In theory, she loses two earners to cover one. I bet it doesn't work like that...
Richard Desmond, at Channel 5, must be less concerned than Radio 2 Controller Bob Shennan that Vanessa might be tired when she gets round to recording her daily half hour for him in the afternoons - and bashing out the odd column for the Express.

Nessa
The Daily Star reveals that Vanessa Feltz and partner Ben Ofeodu plan to marry later this year. Ben says he and Vanessa, rising 49, would also like to adopt.
Indomitable Ben shrugs off concerns about the ratings for their Channel 5 show. "We’re confident we have a great format, but we are still polishing it up. We have more of our showbiz friends on the show and are even getting a studio dog".
This week's celebrity guests are Tamzin Outhwaite, The Barbarellas (formerly Bewitched), Aggro Santos, Annabel Giles and Philippa Forrester.

Not OK quite yet...
The skittish Richard Desmond may be finding, once again, that tv is more regulated than he would like. It seemed certain when he took over Channel 5 last year that he would network's contract with Sky News, in favour of some multimedia Daily Express/Star/Crusader output from Northern & Shell HQ in Lower Thames Street. Yet this week we learn that the contract for bulletins at 5pm and 7pm now stays, with Emma Crosby moving into the old Natasha Kaplinsky seat, albeit at a considerable cheaper rate. And Northern & Shell HQ may be on the move to Luton.
He is, however, committed to some form of OK! TV taking over the Live at Studio 5 slot, apparently as soon as next month. But the daddy of all regulators, the European Union is clear that the boundary between television advertising and television content must not be breached. So whilst a show may share a title with a magazine, it's debatable to what extent they might share content. A story taken from a published magazine may look awfully like a promotional item for that magazine. A story previewing something that may appear in a future edition of a magazine may look awfully like a promotional item for the magazine.
Others have been here before. The story content of Top Gear magazine has to be entirely different from the tv show. The magazine may, of course, preview and review the tv show, but it's a foul the other way round. Still, I'm sure Desmondo and his advisors will work something out...

Desmondo
Stephen Glover this week suggested that Richard Desmond could be more dangerous to the balance of UK media control than Rupert Murdoch. And on Tuesday, we learned that the Five early evening chat show, Live from Studio 5, currently produced by Sky News, will soon be replaced by "OK! TV". But, overall, the Desmond strategy for multi-media domination seems based on the production values of the Express more than anything else - cut the bottom line, cut it again, hammer simple agendas, and make money out of quizzes and competitions. And now, use one to publicise the other.
So the woeful Vanessa show on Channel Five is sponsored by Carpetright; has a full list of set suppliers and product reviews on its website; and is mentioned, editorially, nearly every day in the Daily Star. On Tuesday the headline was "TV favourite Vanessa Feltz sent the censors into overdrive by turning the air blue with a string of sex jokes", which, on full reading, were edited out by the production team, rather than censors. Today, it's "Vanessa Feltz's fiance told how his Big Ben wilted after he got locked inside a freezer. Hunky co-host Ben Ofoedu, 38, tried out trendy cryotherapy for Channel 5’s The Vanessa Show"
Imagine the immortal souls of the subs told to write this stuff; the personal pride of the show's production team at Princess (owned by Elisabeth Murdoch's Shine); and the values and judgements of presenter and the man who's put her back on the telly.

Hamster Wheel
It's spinning now for dear Vanessa, with her first Radio 2 show under her belt, from 0500 to 0630, then Radio London's phone-in, 0900 to 1200, a lie down, then pre-record the next day's Channel Five show, broadcast at 1100am Monday to Friday. Oh, and knock-off a newspaper column for the Express.
"I'm feeling fairly buoyant but I don't know how much of that's adrenaline or a certain kind of shock. I got to the Radio 2 studio at about five past four this morning and I've scarcely stopped talking since. I can hardly remember my own name and now I have to write my newspaper column. So far my voice is alright but this is day one. Day seven or eight, who knows ?", she tells Radio Today.
She'll have top quality guests to keep her grounded on the Channel 5 show; this week there's Liz McLarnon, Hayley Tamaddon, Mylene Klass, Zoe Salmon and Big Brother's Josie Gibson. That's what I call laying down the gauntlet to Piers Morgan......

The giant butterfly of broadcasting
Aaargh. John Plunkett's rumour in the Media Guardian, that Vanessa Feltz will get the early show on Radio 2, has a terrifying ring of credibility to it.
Vanessa's principal income is currently hosting Radio London's phone-in, 0900-1200 every weekday. At the end of October, she announced that "there has been a rather large Vanessa-shaped gap on the telly for far too long now although it is getting smaller... God, what a gastric band and a little life-threatening surgery can do.... The brand new Vanessa Show is starting on Channel 5 every weekday after Matthew's [Wright] show. It’s an unbeatable combination. There will be glamour, glitz, controversy, excitement. Richard [Desmond] will take Channel 5 into the stratosphere.”
So Vanessa will biff Trisha Goddard from the 1045 slot on Channel 5 in the New Year; but why not make more money in a day ? The Radio 2 slot runs 0500-0630 - leaving plenty of time for V to get from Western House to Northern & Shell House, probably with a free set of newspapers in a BBC cab. And Controller R2 Bob Shennan can keep his talk-for-oldies content up, as the BBC Trust demands, 'cos that's what, self-evidently, Vanessa's good at... Isn't she ?
