From the papers

"I am not a conspiracy theorist; I think Dr Kelly killed himself, but I met some Australian spies once who were pretty convinced that MI6 had killed him."  Greg Dyke in The Observer.  Spies, or just convivial lager drinkers, Greg ?

"The BBC Trust, which exists to protect licence fee payers’ interests, should not have permitted such a fudge. The licence fee only exists as a direct levy on viewers to preserve the broadcaster from state interference. If the trustees do not care about that principle, why should anyone else ?"  FT Editorial

"Perhaps, to be on the safe side and stay on good terms with the government, the BBC should ban northerners from appearing on any programmes, just in case they start to moan. An exception could be made for certain situation comedies and Match of the Day"  Rod Liddle in the Spectator, after Transport Minister Phil Hammond was apparently "shocked" by the hostility of a Question Time audience in Middlesbrough.
