Follow this closely. You are the HR Director of the BBC. Your declared earnings are £320k pa. You are removed from the Executive Board. You tell People Management Magazine "Personally, I’m excited about taking on a bigger role including areas that I haven’t dealt with before". Peope Management Magazine ends its piece with the sentence: "It is understood that Adams’ salary will be unaffected by the changes, which come into force in April".
The BBC Executive has a remuneration sub-committee, chaired by senior non-exec Marcus Agius, who is also chairman of Barclays Bank. Its constitution says at least two other non-execs must be on the committee. The DG may attend, as may the Director of BBC People (Lucy Adams) and the BBC Director of Reward (post vacant - Lucy announced Robert Johnston's departure on October 8. The executive board changes were made public on October 12).
Let's hope Mr Agius has time to review the scope of this "bigger role", with a full Towers Watson (nee Perrin) report and some industry-wide benchmarking before April. Otherwise it might look like Lucy was setting her own salary.
