Lingering longer

Whilst BBC DG Tim Davie sticks to his view that the future of UK tv is via the Internet and not transmitters, it seems there are second thoughts in his radio wing about longwave, signposted for closure since 2022.

The Radio 4 longwave transmitters also provide signals to some domestic heating and hot-water systems, switching them on and off as tariffs change during a 24 hour period. This part of the switch-off was planned for June 30th - but, as with winter fuel allowances, the Government is worried that some people still haven't got the message about these RTS meters' obsolescence.   So there'll be an 'impact assessment' on some as yet unspecified date.....
