Signs

The creation of a new job in BBC News often gives an insight into the thinking of the bosses, who perhaps don't realise the impact such a move can have on existing staff.

So today we have an ad for a Politics Investigations Correspondent - News Content.

"The job requires journalists who can spot a good political story that isn’t necessarily in plain sight, but who are also able to react immediately to breaking stories that require investigative skills, for example recent complex stories such as the tax affairs of Cabinet ministers and the Partygate revelations, or sensitive issues around bullying and inappropriate behaviour at Westminster."

There's other ways of doing this; encouraging more investigation ideas from the substantial existing politics reporting team, and give the time to work on them; or designate someone to do investigations for a fixed term.  But this way implies to your current team that you're looking for someone outside the BBC. That, perhaps, you thought the BBC could have done better on ministers' tax affairs, or Partygate. Which doesn't improve morale inside.
