Change at Chester

Readers with long memories have noted that the current Chairman of the Countess of Chester Hospital is Ian Haythornthwaite, former Preston-based Director of Finance at the BBC.

Ian's had long experience as a non-executive in the NHS. Here's the timeline for his arrival at Chester.

July 2018: An unnamed healthcare professional is on suspicion of murdering eight babies and the attempted murder of six others.

September 2018: CEO Tony Chambers resigns;  Dr Susan Gilby appointed new CEO.

March 2020: Sir Duncan Nichol, chair of the Countess of Chester Trust, retires; he'd been in post since 2012.

April 2020: Chris Hannah steps up to Chair, having been a non-executive director since 2018.

August 2021: Chris Hannah steps away...

September 2021: Ian Haythornthwaite arrives as new chair. Dr Susan Gilby, CEO, says “On behalf of the Countess of Chester Hospital, I would like to welcome Ian to his position as Chair of the Board. His experience and expertise during this period will be invaluable as we look to recover from the impact of the pandemic".

July 2022: Dr Susan Gilby makes a formal whistle-blowing complaint about her Chairman, saying he had  "bullied, harassed, intimidated and undermined" her.

December 2022: The Trust suspends Dr Gilby, after she refuses to withdraw her allegations; she gives six months' notice. She is now bringing a case of unfair constructive dismissal. The Trust continues to deny all her allegations.  Jane Tomkinson, OBE is interim CEO.
