CNN calling

Ben Smith, former media columnist of the New York Times and founding editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed News from 2012 to 2020, was the first to report the interest of CNN in acquiring former NYT and BBC big boss Mark Thompson, via Ben's current website, Semafor.

Sir Mark John Thompson, a journalistic stripling at 66, is currently chairman of the board at Ancestry. He doesn't seem to struggle with visits to their HQ, in Lehi, Utah, from his bases in New York and Oxford. At the end of this year, CNN is downsizing its HQ operations further in Atlanta, and there's been a steady drift of key programming to Washington DC and New York, which may suit Sir Mark better.
