The bad cop in the BBC News press office was out at the weekend, when papers got wind of an upcoming 'paper' from news staff about how the News Channel is an important Jenga block in the tottering tower of 'news content'.
It looks like said bad cop had read the whole thing. He/she condemned the paper: “anecdotal, contains no data analysis, and is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of how BBC News operates and on the plans for the new channel. Running one 24-hour channel, rather than two parallel channels, allows us to invest more in our ability to cover breaking news across the BBC.”
“We remain totally committed to covering UK stories and to a 24-hour news channel which serves the needs of UK, as well as international, audiences, even better than we do now.”
We very much look forward to BBC News' data analysis of the issue (The NAO says News has no 'meaningful data' supporting 'Modernising News'). It would help, of course, if BBC News could produce meaningful figures for its efforts online and on social media. Press Gazette uses figures from SimilarWeb to suggest that BBC.com and bbc.co.uk were down 17% year on year in July (whilst still topping their list of English language news sites).
Out of mild interest, SimilarWeb puts tradingaswdr as the 2,862,839th most popular site in the world, and 178,767th in the UK.
