A fortnight until the arrival of Deborah Turness at BBC News. But is the Division she is joining an exemplar of transformational change, or simply a continuing mess, punching below its weight and losing the confidence of staff and viewers ?
It depends how you judge the Grand Project, Modernising BBC News, in which planned coverage has been moved from programme editors to a central team of commissioners, who are 'story led'. And whether the new faces and voices fronting that coverage are better at the job than the more expensive oldsters who have been nudged out.
The National Audit Office is on the case. Its pithy review of this project, issued in December, noted that "News [is] unable to provide meaningful data demonstrating the roll-out of its reforms or the baseline level of performance against which improvements arising from the initiative will be assessed."
