Precious metal

Is our dispassionate, impartial editorial team running news bulletins on BBC1 too eager to lead with Olympic news featuring, largely, Team GB ? Will the formula - headline sequence with joyous clip of contestant weeping over medal, presenter on catwalk recap of today's big wins, here's Dan Roan, recap of today's big wins, with Dan pointing to one over his shoulder with his thumb, here's Natalie Pirks with the day's emotional recap, here's one of our many regional journalists watching today's recaps with family and friends of medallist - ever be unbroken ?

Is our performance better or worse to justify this relentless leading with recaps, often just after a sports programme has ending with a recap, or the following programme starts with a recap ?

I first remember watching TV Olympic coverage from Rome in 1960. With a team of 252 we picked up 20 medals, and were ranked 12th in the world.

In more recent times, we've moved from 313 competitors, 51 medals, 4th in Beijing; 541 competitors, 65 medals, 3rd in London; to 366 competitors, 67 medals, 2nd in Rio. With two days competition to go in Tokyo, we've sent 376 athletes, won 59 medals and stand 4th.  The formula will continue.  Where will Dan stand, and what will he point at ?
