On demand demand

Some back calculations achieved with the help of Ofcom's Media Nations 2021 report.

Netflix rose to 14.8m households subscribed in 2020. Netflix's income from the UK was up 21% year on year, at an estimated £1.15bn. In all, we coughed up £2.11bn to the main UK subscription services. Britbox, the UK's late entrant, contributed an estimated £209m, the same as the previous year.

For that, users came mostly for series. Bridgeton led the way, seen by 7.39m Netflix accounts. Another UK production, the psychological thriller Behind Her Eyes came third in the top 10. The Dig, which many would reckon a quintessentially British film, counts as a US production in Ofcom's chart, at No 6. All the rest of the top ten were American-made.

Netflix offers UK users around 38,000 hours on content; the BBCiPlayer 11,500. All4 carries 15,500 hours.
