Leading players

There remains a certain excitability in the Newsgathering engine room of BBC News, as it moves to greater strategic control over output. The word 'exclusive' was repeated on air several times as Sports Editor Dan Roan brought us 3.17 seconds of his interview with Manchester United's centre half, bracketed with 1.30 seconds of Dan, against the dim background of a secret torch-lit venue.

Was there new 'news' ? "I've done nothing wrong" said Harry Maguire, in line with his 'not guilty' plea. Not an enormous amount in the 10pm bulletin. In the full 35 minutes interview, we learnt that whatever had caused Mr Maguire's sister to drift in and out of consciousness passed quite quickly. They entered what they thought was a hired minibus, and instructed it not to go to hospital or a police station, but to return to the group's villa. It turned off the route, and Maguire and his brother were dragged out, faced by eight men. He ran away to ring his agent and the What's App group in Mykonos "that was supporting us". He said he was walking back to the minibus when eight men (eight more men ?) surrounded him; he knelt, and had one hand handcuffed, when he attempted to run away again. That, he said, was where the claim of resisting arrest came from. Was he drunk ?  "Anyone who knows me knows I can have a few drinks and stay in control". He was held for two nights - but says none of his party were ever interviewed by police or prosecutors for their side of the story.

Dan noted that 'sadly', he was found guilty. In the full 35 minute interview, Dan tries to get him to say sorry to all sorts of people, and to admit he'd been misguided.  Mr Maguire didn't waver in the face of this remorseless battery. Judge for yourself here, from 3.50 seconds in.
