It's interesting that someone in the BBC is briefing that the axing of This Week, hosted by Andrew Neil (it finished in July last year) was a contribution towards the £80m savings BBC News needs to make.
At the time of the announcement, a year ago, it was said that Andrew was 'stepping down' and that the BBC couldn't imagine the show continuing without him. It's hard to see why this should have been a saving to BBC News; it was an independent production, made by Juniper, CEO Samir Shah, brother of R4 Controller Mohit Bakaya. It should have been fully funded by BBC1 (slightly defrayed by a repeat on BBC Parliament). Can anyone put me right ?
