Expect growling from living-room-based news and sport fans at the end of January next year. Those who get their updates from 'connected' tvs, via either the text-based service of the BBC Red Button, or via the BBC News and Sport app icons on their home screen, will find they've gone.
Matthew Postgate, Chief Product and Technology Officer, says the BBC can't afford to keep investing in the technology for the Red Button text service, and that "BBC iPlayer will become the home of much of the video content that is currently available on the BBC Sport and BBC News apps on TVs". Nonetheless, the BBC can afford to add the BBC Sounds app to the Connected TV offer.
I'm sure that Mr Postgate has conducted an Equality Impact Assessment before taking his decision. It presumably says those with impaired vision, who've got used to text on a very big screen, don't matter that much.
