On Report 4

Some of the metrics used in the BBC Annual Report don't look as sexy as they did at the turn of the century, and, frankly, are only going one way.

I refer in particular to the cost per listener/viewer hour, as the BBC faithful become more and more promiscuous. BBC Alba's figure has gone from 14p to 19p over a year, with fewer viewers and those who tune staying for an average of 3 hours 33 minutes a week, down nearly an hour and half. Radio Nan Ghaidheal costs 27p per listener hour, up from 21p a year ago. Radio Cymru is up from 17p to 23p.

Amongst the bigger beasts, Radio 4 goes up from 1p to 2p, Radio 5Live moves from 2p to 3p.  BBC1 is up to 7p, from 6p; BBC2  goes up from 8p to 9p and BBC4 from 5p to 6p.

The BBC News channel costs 7p per listener/hour, up from 6p. The once-threatened BBC Parliament has a good 2018/19, with costs per listener hour falling by 1p, to 4p.
