Coaxing them down

It's a difficult day ahead for Jeremy Dear and the NUJ leadership.  The BBC ( and perhaps others) are engaged in arms-length issuing of teeny-weeny olive branches, in an attempt to get their doomed strike action called off.

Mark Thompson yesterday met Gerry Morrissey, leader of BECTU, and a man the hard left would characterise as a quisling. After their talks, the BBC let it be known that discussions on modalities, not substance, could happen, if the NUJ called off their strike action planned for next Monday and Tuesday.  Either way, the offer is in the house mag, the Media Guardian, and NUJ waverers will be angry if it's not acted on - previous action has been postponed for less.

As discussed here, management are confident of producing more live news output if the strike does go ahead.  Even the grumpy touchstone of UK politics, John Humphrys may make an appearance at the mike this time. And TV news grandee Huw Edwards is due on shift, refreshed from gala dinners and conference hosting.
