Big Ben

Ben Bradshaw steps into Downing Street today for his first Cabinet meeting as Culture Secretary. His first big set-piece interviews will be interesting, given the items in his in tray, and his background.

He was a reporter with the Exeter Express & Echo in 1984 (prop Northcliffe Media, part of the Daily Mail Group - current circulation 20,000), moving to the Eastern Daily Press ( prop Archant - current circulation 60,000) the following year, then to BBC Radio Devon in 1986. A contract as the BBC's man in Berlin came in 1989, then in 1991 he joined the reporting team for Radio 4's The World at One/PM/The World This Weekend - where he stayed until his election as MP for Exeter in 1997.

Where will his loyalties take him, as he contemplates the Ofcom-led drive to give ailing newspaper and media groups licence-fee funds in order to compete regionally and locally with the BBC, using BBC content ?
