Speedy Lisa

Good to see Labour learning from history. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy's thrown open the future funding of the BBC to all-comers in a 12-week consultation.

In March 1977, the sixteen members of the Annan Committee on the Future of Broadcasting reported back after two and a half years considering options for the future of broadcasting, with a five hundred word report. All BBC revenue should come from the tv licence, not advertising...

In May 1986, the seven members of the Peacock Committee reviewing BBC financing reported back after 14 months. They said the licence fee was the 'least worst' option.

In 2003, the Government fired the starting pistol on Charter Review, eventually concluded in 2007, included two years of work by Lord Burns' Independent panel.

So Lisa can clearly knock out a new solution in a matter of weeks.  Here's the key Green Paper paragraph:

Options that the government is considering and seeking views on in this area include:

Reform of the licence fee, whether licence fee concessions should be updated, and options for the BBC to generate more commercial revenue;

Options for funding the World Service and supporting sustainable funding for minority language broadcasting, including S4C.
