Weaseling out

I'm grateful to David Lloyd for his sharp analysis of the latest attempted shift in de-localising BBC Local Radio. The BBC has essentially asked Ofcom if it can officially give up on local programming after lunch on Sundays; many stations are already taking a national show called "Make A Difference", when they haven't got live sport commentaries. This week it featured QI, dogs, Alan Davies and an actress from a new version of Robin Hood. The argument that listeners will be better off is not made.

There's another puzzling request: Radio 5Live no longer wants to count live commentaries. It says it has to re-listen to shows to add all the little bits of 'live racing' or updates on sports being carried on Sports Extra. There's something disingenuous about this; rights owners want to know how many minutes of 'live commentaries' are carried; the update stuff can be left out. And if 5Live wants to boast "more live commentaries" than anyone else, it ought to have the figures to back that up.
