Swings and ....

On the face of it, the latest RAJAR quarterly listening figures make grim reading for the BBC. Year on year, reach to all BBC network radio is down close to 6%. Radio 1 is down 10%, Radio 3 is down 11%, Radio 4 is down 9% and Radio 5Live is down 10%.   Radio 2 is down 4%, 6Music is up 0.4%.

BBC Local Radio in England has bucked this trend, up 2.3% in reach year on year, as has Radio Scotland, up 2.2%. Radio Wales is down 18%, Radio Cymru is down 12% and Radio Ulster is down 22%.

It's possible that some or all of this is down to a shift to podcast listening, with 16.5m adults now saying they listen to at least one every week. Someone, somewhere, is tracking how this is working out for the BBC, but transparent, they ain't.   "Live" listening on BBC Sounds counts for 65% of its total hours; Sounds reported an average 5.1m weekly users across all content (which includes counting visualised content on the iPlayer).
