Nigel: Part One

This is the briefest of notes to say that my friend Nigel Charters died yesterday in St Thomas' Hospital, London. In the version for summaries, he was 75, and with his partner Ana, and close friends and colleagues, closing down just before the Six O'Clock News in a room with a panoramic view of the Commons. He had various health issues, but in recent days, they all seemed to combine, and he ended up in intensive care.  What shocked us all was the speed; we'd been out, 'boulevarding' as Phil Longman used to call it, only days before.

From The Taranaki Times to Visnews, LBC, Radio 4 Today, LBC, Newsbeat, LBC again, and BBC 'Continuous News', he worked hard and loved life. Nigel Part Two will follow, later.

  1. Such sad news. Nigel was an excellent colleague over many, many years and a thoroughly good bloke. He'll be much missed.

  2. Reykjavik summit 1986… my lasting memory of Nigel: we were doing the Six o’clock news live from abroad for (I think) only the second time ever. Bong went the bongs..”This is David McNeil in Iceland with the Six o’clock news”. Into the headlines with a clip from Reagan… for a split second the reel failed to turn. One almighty kick from Nigel, and all was well. So sorry to hear the news, and I hadn’t seen him for many years. Lovely man.

  3. What sad news. Nigel was my boss when I was Manager at the Weather Centre. I liked and respected him. He was supportive and encouraging. A lovely man. Rest in peace.
