Wearing knowledge lightly

Those hoping that the arrival of Amol Rajan as a Today presenter would make the programme more accessible to a wider audience will have raised eyebrows this morning. He managed to get 'adamantine', 'desultory' and 'nugatory' into one cue. Maybe he should try 'insufferable smartass' next time....

  1. Why did the Radio 4 1800 news fall off the air last night? IT started four minutes late after a lot of dead air.

  2. Oh, no. Not having that. It's RADIO 4. Britain is allowed ONE broadcast media outlet where you don't have to apologise or cringe for being brainy. Or just using the full range of the language. If you can't say 'desultory' on R4, where can you? I'm a huge fan of 5 Live, LBC, plain English. And Amol talks too quickly; slow down, man! But he's an intellectual and I want intellectuals as well as hacks on Today.
