Oldham

Highly-non-scientific vox pops were a feature of BBC tv news coverage of the General Election campaign, to the concern of many who think the examination of issues and proposed policies deserved more space.

Last night the vox pop technique surfaced again, in a Ten O'Clock News report from Oldham, as part of coverage of the debate on child grooming. One woman said "[I] think it's all been covered up and will we ever get to know the truth ?". The reporter said "Do you feel like there's more still to be heard ?" A second woman answered "Oh, 100 per cent"   A third was asked "It has been looked into in Oldham, hasn't it ?" "No, not as far as I'm concerned. As a mother and a grandmother, no. It's been swept under the carpet for years".

Are these, then, expert witnesses ?  Have they knowledge they've shared with the authorities ?  Did the reporter ask for details ?  Reeta back announced the report as a 'snapshot' of views in Oldham. Dangerous stuff.
