Joining the dots

New BBC job ad: "The Senior Data Engineer is a new role that will support the newly created Product Data Domain teams.  You will help to build ETL pipelines to ingest and transform data to develop the data products that will power key value use cases across the BBC."

A little, inexpert, decoding: ETL = extract, transform, load - three inter-dependent processes of data integration used to pull data from one database and move it to another. So 'ingest and transform" is prolix.

Key value: Key-value pairs existed before software. A telephone directory is a good example, where the key is the person or business name, and the value is the phone number. Key-value databases are used to generate and store product recommendations and personalized lists.

To this amateur, what's surprising is that this is a 'new role'; you'd have thought the 'personalisation' journey was much further ahead in the BBC.
