External solicitors reviewing executive pay-outs in RTE's 2017 and 2021 redundancy schemes have found that ten departures did not satisfy the requirements of a redundancy within the meaning of the Redundancy Payments Acts. They were worth an average of 223,000 Euros.
The lawyers warn that the Revenue may rule that RTE should not have applied for statutory redundancy tax exemption.
Chief Finance Officer Breda O’Keeffe applied under RTÉ’s 2017 voluntary redundancy scheme, with a business case suggesting promoting a highly thought-of internal candidate as a successor would lead to €200,000 savings, on the back of a restructuring of the broadcaster’s finance department. The restructuring and promotion never happened, the savings were never made, but Ms O’Keeffe had already been offered legally binding terms of redundancy, understood to be worth in the region of €400,000.
