Reach has announced it needs 450 job cuts to balance the books next year, 10% of its workforce. 320 of the jobs to go are in 'editorial'. This year, 330 people have been made redundant by the company.
Reach has about 20% market share in local newspapers. It also has the services of some 75 'local democracy' reporters funded by the licence fee.
The news comes on the 56th anniversary of the launch of BBC Radio Leicester, which had been preceded by some 'dry runs', 'to see if there was enough local news to fill two magazine programmes'.
