The BBC has promoted a real 'citizen of the world' to edit its digital news operation aimed at the USA from Washington.
Kevin Ponniah, 33, hailing from Melbourne, was part of the class of 2008 at the United World College of South East Asia in Singapore; he took his international baccalaureate back to Melbourne University to study politics and economics (including a year in Copenhagen); got a graduate diploma in journalism from RMIT, thence to Universitas Katolik Indonesia Atma Jaya in Jakarta, for a year on practical journalism and Indonesian. In 2015 he was award an M Sc from the LSE in International Relations.
He's written and freelanced in Melbourne, Singapore, Jakarta and Phnom Penh - and in 2015, started shifts on the BBC News website in London. He's had spells with Outlook on the BBC World Service, and as a deputy editor for Asia in Singapore, and has recently made his name with 'live pages'.
What’s more embarrassing - buying a rhubarb and ginger gin tonic in a can at a train station or getting ID’d while doing so? Asking for a friend
