Ad hoc ?

An outsider might think the BBC's flagship arts programme 'imagine...' has been moved to a palliative care ward.

The press release, announcing an invitation to tender for a new series of arts documentaries, working title 'In My Own Words', says "BBC One’s existing arts strand Imagine will continue alongside In My Own Words as Specials once the current run announced last week comes to an end."

Twelve days ago, four new editions of 'imagine...' were announced; hardly a series. Once they're done, the programme, no longer a 'strand', will rely on 'specials'. And new Arts TV boss will be the gatekeeper: "We look forward to discussing ideas for future Imagine Specials with Alan Yentob."

Indies will be interested to know if BBC Studio's Specialist Factual Unit will still be paying Al as 'Series Editor', whether the presenter fee follows successful bids, and how much of an 'imagine...' department, claimed to be based in Glasgow, remains...

Meanwhile, "This Cultural Life" presenter John Wilson, will be worried that the commissioning brief for 'In My Own Words' looks awfully close to the multi-media programme he's already presenting.
