The Telegraph reports a change of reporting lines in BBC complaints handling, in a bid to convince sceptics that the BBC is not marking its own homework.
Peter Johnson, announced as Director, Editorial Complaints and Reviews back in March, will now report directly to Director General Tim Davie, rather than to Director of Editorial Policy and Standards, David Jordan. Johnston is in charge of the Executive Complaints Unit.
David Jordan has been running Editorial Policy since 2005, leading the writing of the guidelines by which most complaints are judged. In June this year he described with pleasure the rigorous internal complaints handling procedure around impartiality, which has to happen before complainers can turn to Ofcom "What is critical is that in the period since 2017 when Ofcom took over the responsibility for accuracy and impartiality complaints, as well as everything else, Ofcom has upheld one complaint that has gone through that process that I have described in all that time on impartiality."
David will probably be glad to see routines with Peter taken from his busy diary. David is Secretary General of Public Broadcasters International; on the board of the Organisation of News Ombudsmen and Standards Editors; on the board of the International Press Institute; and a Trustee Director of the BBC Pension Scheme.
