After an interregnum dating back to the First Night of the Proms in 2022, the BBC have found a new Director of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus - it's to be Bill Chandler, currently running the BBC Concert Orchestra.
Bill Chandler was, until 2021, working with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. He came to the UK in 1995, from the Houston Symphony Orchestra. He has a degree from the University of Connecticut, and and a Masters from Rice University in Houston. He's taken the Concert Orchestra to the circus stage of the Hippodrome in Great Yarmouth, managed a Southbank concert with the Beano and CBBC's Dennis and Gnasher Unleashed, and helped appoint Anna-Maria Helsing as new Chief Conductor.
The acting co-directors were Susanna Simmons, the Symphony Orchestra Manager, and Tom Philpott, in charge of planning for the SO.
