Africa hand

It couldn't have been 'timed more badly', says departing Newsnight editor Stewart Maclean, 41. He's been with the programme since 2017, was promoted to interim editor at the end of 2021, and confirmed in the post in April 2022.

He says he's leaving for 'deeply personal' reasons, for a job called BBC World News Content Africa bureau chief, based in Nairobi - a post that doesn't seem to have been advertised externally. His affinity with Africa started in a gap year from Manchester University, and, post the Daily Mirror graduate reporter scheme, he spent four years freelancing from Johannesburg for UK papers.
