Paul Royall, midwife of the emerging BBC News channel, appeared on BBC Newswatch to face viewers' criticisms. All, as ever, were deflected. Paul said a new survey by BBC audience researchers said that 60% were happy about the new balance between domestic and international stories, and that the remaining 40% were split - half saying too much domestic, half saying too much international - so that's all good then.
The setting chosen by Mr Royall - an apparently completely empty production floor. 40 odd desks.
