Lessons

Some excellent public service broadcasting lessons from l'affaire Tubridy in Ireland. It looks like RTE had been giving the broadcaster some of The Late Late Show sponsorship money from Renault on top of his declared salary. That sponsorship ended, but RTE had apparently 'guaranteed' it to Mr Tubridy, so devised a way of paying him for 'consultancy services'.

What's not clear is if the sponsorship funds would ever have been declared. Mr Tubridy has 'stepped down' from The Late Late Show, and didn't appear at the microphone for his RTE Radio One show on Friday - nor is he expected back next week. In 2011/12 Radio 2 (UK version) experimented with Ryan Tubridy as a stand-in presenter; he may have more availability now.

Expect no such shenanigans when Kevin Bakhurst takes over as Director General in July.
