Does it ad up ?

One question for Wednesday night's debate about the News Channel - is it ad-funded ?

The majority of its output was, historically, was produced for BBC World News, which, until July 2021 was part of BBC Global News Ltd, and was supposed to balance the books. In 2019/20, it made a profit of £2m; in 2020/21, a loss of £9m. In July 2021, 'editorial control' was handed back to public service broadcasting (which is odd, 'cos they thought they already had it) and BBC Global News Ltd was subsumed into BBC Studios. So we can't easily identify how much money it makes from ads on the ad-carrying World-stream of BBC News. Entertainingly, bbc.com, the address for BBC News around the world, is still part of BBC Studios.

We ought to know whether revenue from the ads on the BBC News channel around the world is hypothecated to the operation; and, if not, how much the 'new' news channel costs to UK licence fee-payers, compared with the old.

I'm sure Paul Royall can help with this sort of question.
