Is there a fair way to recruit a new BBC Chairman by June without inventing a new process ?
Possibly - use the old process properly. First, the current Prime Minister must state clearly that there'll be none of this 'preferred No 10 candidate' nonsense. And the DCMS interview panel must be selected within the DCMS, not by No 10. (In the Sharp interview process No 10 picked both the Senior Independent Panel Member, and the two other Independent Panel Members).
Tell the DCMS that the panel should have 5 diverse, independent members, whose names will be declared before applications open. They can then mark up to three candidates as suitable, and yes, the Culture Secretary and Prime Minister can then have a pick - they daren't do anything daft this time. And for a bit of extra fun, why not carry the Select Committee's scrutiny interview of the preferred candidate live on BBC1 ?
Once June is past, the Dimbleby idea of a cross-party public commission to supervise contentious appointments is worth a run.
