Reporting time 1

The BBC Annual Report has some difficult stats on BBC News. Whilst overall reach (measured by survey) is stable at 80%, BBC TV News and Current Affairs weekly reach is down from 63% to 56%; the percentage of adults who used BBC News Online on average per week is down from 36% to 34%, with the number of unique weekly browsers in the UK down from 50 million to 38 million. BBC Radio Network News and Current Affairs programmes seem to have bucked the trend, with a reach of 52%, compared with 36% when it was last fully measured in 2019/20.

In promises made in The Annual Plan, the BBC News app is in Beta-testing, rather than done, and new forms of digital news offers have not arrived.

In more survey material, when asked "Of all the news sources (TV, radio, newspaper, magazine, website, app or social media) which one source are you most likely to turn to if you want impartial news coverage ?" 39% said the BBC, compared with 40% the previous year.

In Scotland, BBC Scotland spent £3m more on content, up to £37m, and saw a drop in reach from 21% to 18%. Costs per user hour at BBC Alba have gone up from 18p in 2019/20 to 25p.

More soon, as we plough through this vast document....
