Generally, we consume fewer live tv and radio programmes in the summer, apart from a switch to live sport. The BBC strategists have timed a few audience-challenging moves so that their impact might get lost in that general trend.
The now-centrally-unloved BBC News channel, increasing a dwindling opt-out from the bovine BBC World, has lost its high definition slot of 107 on Freeview, leaving it with only standard definition on 231. You now need to 'sign in' with a BBC account to view the BBC News app in the UK; BBC Sounds is about to suffer the same fate, which will impact listening on smart speakers. None of these moves are likely to increase audience figures during the summer.
