Most newspapers fell for the preview narrative that the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham would attract a worldwide tv audience of a billion. Some BBC programmes forecast 1.5bn.
In the UK, the opening ceremony averaged 4.5m viewers in the overnight ratings, with a peak of 5.3m. That compares with the Glasgow Games opening in 2014, which averaged 7.7m and peaked at 9.3m. The Scottish Government's post-games analysis suggested a reach of 1.5bn for the whole tournament, through a range of tv and radio partnerships.
In Australia, the live ceremony was watched by 99k, with 192k catching the later repeat.
