The key production credits have been clipped on iPlayer, so it's hard to tell who was in Sophie Raworth's ear last night as she 'chaired' the questioning of Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss in Stoke.
One hopes it wasn't Jonathan Munro, the interim director of News, greeting the candidates at the door with one hand in his pocket, alongside DG Tim Davie in jacket, chino and white trainers. One suspects somebody in the gallery quite liked it being 'tasty' between the combatants - there was little attempt to reign in Rishi, and little rigour in the questioning. In particular the device of Statler and Waldorf/Mason and Islam didn't work; their interventions provided opportunities to take answers down side alleys, rather than push for clarity. Liz Truss again mirrored her heroine Maggie with a bold mispronunciation of Faisal as Phay-sall.
