The power of 6

The BBC has chosen to highlight record numbers for 6Music in the latest quarterly listening figures, with a weekly reach of 2.85m. Chief Content Officer Charlotte Moore said "How better to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the much loved BBC Radio 6 Music than with these figures ! They really illustrate the unique place that the station has in its listeners’ lives, with its eclectic schedule and specialist, passionate DJs who day in day out champion music".

Her boss, Director General Tim Davie was Director of Audio & Music in March 2010, when a decision was taken to close the station: "Clearly we didn't arrive lightly at the decision to recommend the closure of 6 Music: it is distinctive, much-loved and I too am passionate about its output. But I believe the best way for us to provide that kind of programming is by looking at other ways to find it a bigger audience." Three months later the BBC Trust reprieved the station saying management had failed to make the case for closure.

6Music had a content spend of £12m last year, to help drive the 2.85m audience; Radio 3 had £34m for an audience of 2.05m.
