Pie charts

The latest quarterly radio listening figures show a pie of similar size, sliced in different ways. We can't yet do year on year comparisons, because this is just the third set of figures using some new research tools (including direct data from smartphones), but quarter on quarter, speech stations are generally a little up, and pop music channels chasing 12-18 listeners are down.

Matt Deegan and Adam Bowie offer the analysis of experts; I'd just throw in the possibility that, as the pandemic eases, fewer of school-age are 'off' at home, and the working members of the family may be controlling shared radio listening more as they return to more normal hours.

Over at All Perspectives, owners of GB News, they can reflect on one technical triumph. After all their early tv glitches, they've got the sound element of their tv station on to air, and with little promotion, delivered a weekly reach of 239,000 from a standing start. Times Radio will be pleased that they've added nearly as much as that in a quarter-on-quarter rise from 503,000 to 702,000.  LBC's rolling news station broke 1m listeners for the first time, and the brand was up 9%. Mid-morning leftie James O'Brien still beats Nick Ferrari at Breakfast. Over at the increasingly angry and anti-woke TalkRadio, ahead of the launch of its bi-media existence, the old schedule added nearly 20%, to 650,000.

More later....
