Nobody should be surprised by a lead tv presenter taking August and a bit as holiday. It happens on all channels. But with Piers Morgan Uncensored, the jewel in TalkTV's crown, regularly recording less than 50k in the overnight averages, something has to change by September.
TalkTV is a channel that only started because of Covid. Rupert Murdoch decided to sit out the pandemic in the Home Counties, at 91, with good access to vaccines and top private health care if necessary. He watched the car-crash launch of GB News from June last year, and decided to end Rebekah Brooks dithering about a tv channel. It HAD to be possible to a) do it better and b) make real money.
Sadly, his three prime time shows have made little impact. Piers Morgan makes use of plenty of social media in his hour, but has so far failed to produce a viral clip. His performance is relentless, boorish, and cold-eyed. As Ben Sixsmith writes in The Critic "Humour? Charm? Eloquence? All of them are alien to a man for whom God, in His wisdom, decided to exhaust his supplies of aimless belligerence."
He needs one of two things: an audience, taking the show in the direction of US late night shows, or a co-presenter. Or Rupert and Rebekah should end his contract, replacing him with a cheaper TalkRADIO hour, aiming to wrestle a bottom-feeding UK audience from GB News.
