The Church Times wonders about the BBC's pledges about a renewed commitment to matters religious.
You will remember that James Purnell took responsibility for religion at Board level from 2016. Which reader can have missed the powerful impact of the Year of Belief, 2019, across all outlets ?
Perhaps more memorable: Mr Purnell's 2017 decision to create a religion editor, leading to the elevation of Martin Bashir in 2018. Mr Bashir 'stepped down' from the post in May, 'to focus on his health'. The BBC said he would be replaced, but four months later, there's no sign of the job ad. In the meantime, News has found new Science, Technology, Climate and Social Affairs Editors - so it's not as if they're not in the swing of things. It can't be that News Content, née Newsgathering, likes to spot a good candidate before it goes public, can it ?
