Poor work by hacks in general on Sajid Javid's knee jerk response, presumably, as is the new norm, to Government polling as well as indignation in the Mail and Telegraph, on lack of face to face GP appointments.
Has anyone actually seen the 'nine point plan' ? No sign of a release from gov.uk. The additional £250m Sajid says he's providing compares with an overall UK spend on health of £225.2 billion in 2019, so he's adding 0.00111 to the budget. It's hard to break down total spend on GP surgeries, but when combined with dentists and home care providers, it amounts to around £54 billion.
The BMA notes that the overall number of FTE (full-time equivalent) GPs has seen little growth since 2015, with the number of GP partners significantly reducing in that time....
In February 2020, to combat the stasis in GP workforce numbers, the Government announced a drive to recruit an additional 6000 GPs by 2024. That’s 1200-1500 extra doctors in general practice per financial year by the end of 2024.
There are actually now 1,803 fewer fully qualified full time-equivalent GPs today than there were in 2015.
Looking at the last year, between September 2020 and August 2021 the number of GP partners reduced by 918 doctors. The number of salaried and locum GPs increased by 611 over the same period. Factoring in the decrease in partners means that the number of fully qualified GPs by headcount decreased by 307 in this time.
