Gearing up

Is plonking Top Gear into a Sunday evening schedule where the tone is set by Countryfile and the Antiques Roadshow too much for the BBC1 audience ? The first episode of the new season was watched by an average of 3.1m (15.6% share) according to the overnight ratings - the highest rating to start a run since 2016, when Matt leBlanc and Chris Evans were at the helm on BBC2.

Meanwhile, on Saturday night, the BBC News at 10 topped the ratings, at 4.8m, just ahead of Britain's Got Talent on 4.7m.  The Little Mix talent show was steady, unfortunately, at 1.9m.
