One repository of ineffable wisdom seems to be clinging to BBC News, while all others rush to the exit.
The Greatest Living Foreign Correspondent recently shared his thoughts about the fall of the Berlin Wall in a documentary on BBC4. Technically, John Simpson was in Warsaw when it happened, but headed back for a planned live think piece for the following night's 9pm bulletin. In the documentary, he laments the driving skills of his producer, which, he implies, made him a bit late. The producer, Richard Sambrook, can't really be blamed for the satellite breaking up, which it did not far into John's first answer.
No world event of any consequence has ever happened without the GLFC on hand - but, in his Oxford apartment, John now seems reconciled to this miss. Maybe the reassuring grip of his mustard footwear stopped the throbbing in his temple.....
