See what happens when you chase the yoof audience at the weekend ? You scare off the regular viewers.
BBC1's latest stab at a talent show features the wit and charm of manufactured girl group Little Mix (now aged 27 to 29*) trying the manufacture a group to join them on tour, promoting their latest album. It was probably designed to run on sequential Saturdays, but lockdown meant the live finals didn't get recorded. So a rather duff decision to run the auditions on both Saturday and Sunday was made, to get the thing finished alongside the album release, which was probably a condition of the deal.
The first Saturday show scored a meagre 1.94m average in the overnights, but will probably double in catch-up. The first Sunday show managed 1.85m, but moved nearly 2 million to use the remote. 3.79m watched Countryfile before, and 4.08m watched Antiques Roadshow afterwards.
*In one of their searching interviews with younger male talent, the Little Mixers referenced "JT". The young male didn't have a clue, and was no wiser when they explained that they were talking about Justin Timberlake. Justin is 39.
Unsurprising when you consider that the Countryfile/Antiques Roadshow demographic have been bombarded with jangly & loud Little Mix trails before and after their other favourite shows for the past two weeks. These little public information films alerted them to what was coming and they sensibly tuned out.
