Tim ? TIM ? You know that bit where you said "I do think this moment marks the end of linear expansion for the BBC" ? You know, no new channels ?
See what James Purnell and his team have done. "Brand new 24 hour dance music stream Radio 1 Dance will launch on BBC Sounds on Friday October 9th at 6pm."
What's the difference between a 24-hour stream and a channel ? It will be largely re-broadcasts of existing shows, but there are some 'specially-curated mixes', so I suggest that it's not without additional cost. The greater worry is that it lacks public purpose. The BBC's music networks also carry news, information and some documentary content. Is there really market failure in this country for people wishing to dance to this sort of music round the clock ?
