Head shaking

A major guessing game is on at Broadcasting House. Gavin Allen, BBC Head of News Output, updates his 1,000-plus staff regularly with encouraging emails noting recent journalistic triumphs. This week, he's confessed to finding one BBC News interview "deeply frustrating/bordering on arrogant".

This leads to a philosophical riff from the thought-leader. "Certainty is very comforting but it's rarely how the real world works; not black and white, but frustratingly grey. As BBC journalists we need to revel in that grey. Because that is often where real impartiality lies....."

If you notice anyone scratching their head in the background of bulletins today, you can see why.
