Balance of trade

Outgoing BBC DG Lord Hall told the Edinburgh TV Festival, proudly, that, "in 2018, PSBs delivered over 32,000 hours of UK-made original content. The big streamers? 221 hours."

More recent figures may show the BBC turning increasingly to non-UK-made stuff. BBC Three, tipped for a return to a linear existence under Tim Davie, currently promotes "Good Trouble", a Disney-ABC series about starting out working life in LA; "Fort Salem", about three witches in the US Army, made by Will Ferrell's LA production company; "Canada's Drag Race"; "Shrill", which follows "an overweight young woman who wants to change her life — but not her body" made by Warner Brothers; "Looking for Alaska", a teen love story made by Paramount for Hulu; "Harper's Island", a CBS horror-mystery series; "Ambulance Australia" and many more.

Now, a big US series is getting a big slot on BBC2. Starting on Saturday September 5th, Battlestar Galactica has over 70 episodes in its back catalogue, all of them to be available in iPlayer. It first appeared in 2003, and was shown here on Sky. The 2020/21 figures for the balance between UK original content and bought-in stuff will be interesting.
